GRENOBLE
Site specifications.

Prof. Jan Tucny, IUG UPMF Grenoble

Site choice
The site located in Grenoble central urban area offers the opportunity to confront European students, architects and town planners, with the emergence of an ambitious project of complex urban restructuration, redesigning and implementing new functions for an insulated "scientific peninsula". The district links and exchanges with the city-centre and surrounding parts of metropolitan area, new housing developments with residential functions and equipments, re-qualification of urban spaces and city image have to be regenerated. The scientific peninsula urban project called "GIANT" covering 250 ha of existing enclosed land including scientific utilities, research centers, schools of engineers has to be transformed into livable district welcoming new diversified populations and urban activities. The first sketch of the regeneration concept have been elaborated in 2008 by French famous architect Claude Vasconi for Grenoble Municipality, proposing general axis for a new spatial organization and land use, connections with the rest of the city and with the main University Campus. This concept has to be precised, completed and implemented. The recent choice of Grenoble as a pilot site for French national University development programme and the label of European New Technology Competence Cluster mobilizes now new means, accelerates demands for preliminary expertises and initiation of priority projects. Several variants of spatial organization elaborated recently feed the public debates, arouse the criticism or different local alternative propositions. The aim of the Oikodomos Workshop is to associate partner European schools of architecture and town planning to this debate and to offer to the students the opportunity to join a strategic project in its creative phase.

Workshop theme « Housing for diversity »
The district of the peninsula has to be open for a higher functional and residential mixity. The new district has to welcome new populations, present a new image and offer diversified housing, services and equipments. The OIKODOMOS program allows to conceive a contemporary approach of housing projects inspired by principles of accessibility, flexibility, energy efficiency and positive environmental impact and seen as a constituent of the global sustainable urban development. Students will work on the various spatial scales and typologies adapted to the new residents. They can test the applicability of the similar experiences led in their country to the French context and Grenoble specificity. Presentations of multiple students' works will contribute to the democratic debate between the municipality, elected members, citizens and professionals and confere to the debate an interesting European added-value .
